Had a pretty good chase! Wish I was in Texas though. Anyway saw 3 tornadoes in SW Kansas south of DDC. We may have possibly saw another one, but we are not quite sure. Have to review our video. The first tornado was a classic elephant trunk and the second was a large wedge, but it was at night. Will post video ASAP. Congrats to all those who made it to Texas and scored HUGE!!!!!! Will post a chase log later today.

Here is a video still of the second tornado.

Saw two large tornadoes on the southernmost storm, one north of Turkey, the other north of Quail (just after sunset). Incredible storm, incredible structure, esp. just before it produced the Quail tornado. The inflow on this thing was insane, and when we got hit with the RFD as the meso crossed the road, we really got slammed. Hurricane force winds at least, no question about it, probably quite a bit stronger. Nice way to end the tornado drought I've been having since June 12, 2004.

Chase Report Done: HERE (http://www.realclearwx.com/march28.htm) VIDEO: HERE (http://www.realclearwx.com/nwtextorn.htm)

Saw 7 tornadoes over the course of about 2 1/2 hours.

First tornadoes were north of Silverton, Tx

I saw four seperate tornadoes in this area.

Made mistake here and went south of Caprock Canyons State Park instead of north but we could still see #5 developing to our north

The rest of the chase wasnt as eventfull but got a few nice pictures and 2 other tornadoes. The first picture below shows the storm just before it got dark between McLean and Clarendon, Tx. The second shows a tornado that touched down for just a moment about 15-20 miles south of McLean, Tx but the picture doesnt show it as good as a previous lightning strike I missed. And the 3rd picture shows wall cloud northeast of McLean, Tx.

Gods the only one that knows how many different tornadoes dropped out of the storm I chased. Just an opinion, I would have to say 5.......Heck of a day.

Chased the storm that blew up 4 miles to the east of Booker, TX in Lipscomb County. Tornado formed 200 yards to my north on View point road. the Tornado crossed Hwy 15 and continued north, reached the OK state line and there was couple people killed by the storm and you can see on one of the photos of the house roof being taken off.......Storm continued to gain stength and became a multiple votez wedge. The tornado dissipated 6 miles north of highway 3 in Beaver County.

Tornado was on the ground for 32:12 minutes
2 fatalities in Beaver County

Sorry about the photo quality, these are video still shots......
I will be uploading YOUTUBE video

Saw 5 tornadoes all around Goodland and areas N from there, three of them after dark and two of them on the ground at once, one of the tornadoes at night (a large wedge) was on the ground for a very long time and I am guessing was ATLEAST a half mile wide as we followed it up horrible dirt roads right towards bird city. Still on the road, will sort through pics and stuff tommorow. Maybe if I have time as it looks like another chase day.

Had an exam at OU in Norman, which ran from 4-5pm, so I didn't leave Norman until ~5:10pm, but still managed to grap a couple tornadoes in the TX Panhandle near and after dark! The tornadoes were sweet, but I feel even better that I destroyed (performed very well) that exam!

I will post a full report tomorrow as I still have 150 miles to get back to KC. I traveled 450 miles and missed the big show just south of Goodland by about 20 minutes. C'est la vie. It was still a good chase though and I did get some cool shots, including my first lightning shot after dark. More details and pics to come after I've had some sleep. Congrats to all who caught some tornadoes today.

I don't really post chase reports, but I want to for this event. Kenichi and I left OUN at about 3:00 pm to go SW on 44 to Lawton after seeing a building CU field in the area on sat. At 4:30 we made it to Lawton and continued west to Altus to get food and decide if we should drive into Texas (which would make it a full day commitment). We finally drove into TX and got east of Childress around 7pm. We made it to Wellington around 7:45 and at 8:00 pm we intercepted the infamous Mclean, TX mothership using only luck and smartphone google maps (on route 3143):D . Since it was after dark by 8:30'ish we could see some serious lighting behind a lowering wallcloud and within a few moments we could make out a stovepipe tornado. We sat SE of Mclean and watched to see what happend, thankfully (at the time) it looked like the tornado had lifted and Mclean seemed undamaged, we got on I-40 and stopped several times to look at the storm as it moved quite rapidly to our north (we also noticed that they had closed I-40 going west). I hope to find a way to do some screen grabs of my video of the tornado in the next few days and I am curious to see the track of the tornado since there are now reports that Mclean may have been hit.

Video of the tornado near Goodland, KS (http://www.drugrecognition.com/skip/chase/070328/07032801.wmv)

Full Log and Pictures (http://www.drugrecognition.com/skip/chase/070328)

Caravanned with Jerry Funfsinn, intercepted 5 tornadoes and two funnels including:
a rain wrapped funnel 2/3's way down
a beautiful trunk backlit by the setting sun
another trunk lightning illuminated
a large wedge backlit by lightning observed for well over a half hour
a cone tornado on the ground with the wedge

We had a funnel under a storm to the north earlier and a needle funnel after the first tornado, but it did not touch down. Also saw nice supercell striations and fantastic lightning.

Im going to go ahead and post another reply in this thread since the tornado did cross state lines and into Beaver, County and did damage. The tornado touched down in Lipscomb County about 3 hundred yards in front of me, LOL....Tornado quickly moved north, across hwy 15 and eventually into Beaver county. The tornado was rope like at the beginning and it quickly evolved into a monster multiple vortex wedge.............
During this time, a rope like tornado developed and struck a house, killing 2, it was hard to watch that happen. The second video grab shows the house being hit. After that, it just turned into a wedge fest...................LOL
Hope to have youtube videos tommarrow

Tornado stayed on the ground for a total of 32 minutes
Tornado traveled a little over 20 miles.
2 fatalities

I will post pics and links later but to make a long story short. I chased with Jeremy Wilson from the Holy Tornado group and we witnessed about 6 tornadoes from the Chitaque area NE towards Mclean along with 80% of the Panhandle & Norman chasers and their dogs. :-p

Me and my chase partner Sergio Blas got on the storm that would pass by Hedley, Tx. We left OKC bout 3pm and made it to Hedley just as they were blowing the sirens there. We watched as the wall cloud moved in our genral direction from the southwest. We satout side Hedley and watched till we started getting quarter sized hail. We head to the east of Hedley to stay out of the path of the wall cloud which ended up to be a goo dthing caused it then produced several funnels. I am not sure if any made contact with the ground. The few that came down real low we didn't get on still but on video. We got the 2 more tornado's north of Hedley heading back towards McLean were I witnessed a small brief tornado that the pic came out horriable, then along with the large caravan of chaser's got glimpes of the McLean tornado. Non on still but maybe on video. Haven't got to review it yet. Not bad for my first chase of this season. 2 to maybe 3. I would like to know if the one by Hedley ever touched down. But any ways here are my pics which I hope I lin k correctly! Can't wait for the next round!:)

Same success to report as the others in the panhandle. Saw multiple touchdowns from Briscoe County to McLean.

The best by far was the first in extreme northeastern Briscoe county. It went from a funnel not connected to its base at the ground, to a tube, a stove pipe, and finally roped out in the picturesque sunlight for several minutes.

Today was my first chase of the year. Also got a new ride (see avatar), and this was the first time I took it out. Been chasing the last few years in a beat-up old Caprice, so this car is a welcome change. Had to put decals on it so law enforcement wouldn't think I was trying to impersonate.

Went from central Oklahoma to Shamrock, went south a bit, then headed north. Found a storm cycling through wallclouds in far north Texas. Followed the storm into Lipscombe County and stayed with it until it produced. Saw at least 6 separate tornadoes (chase partner claims 8). Unfortunately, I never could get as close as I wanted due to wet dirt roads being the only option. Closest I got was probably 3/4 mi. to a mile away. My video is similar to Brandon Whittington's, only perhaps a bit further away.

The Lipscombe County storm was a very, very nice cyclic tornadic storm. It was a real pity that two people died. An EMT in Laverne, OK told me that the two people had been in the cellar and came out, thinking that the storm was over, only to be killed by it. Have no idea how true that is.

All in all, a great chase day and a great way to break in a new ride. I feel bad that the two people died, but at least it wasn't more. SPC showing 65 preliminary tornadoes. Looking forward to the '07 season!

About the same report as many others. Caught tornados from Silverton NE through McClean.

Also not reported as a tornado yet but it was was the "wind damage" near Miami in Roberts county that destroyed a trailer house and blew over a semi. We drove through the path with numerous snapped trees and powerlines and it was a tornado. hwy 60 was shut down. We were able to get through the scene because Kananis stepdad is the county sheriff and was onscene. Also 1 man was in the trailer house at the time and was killed. So that now makes 3 fatalities for the day :(

Hi, new member here. I live and work in San Jose, CA, so here are some mammatus pics I took up in Marysville, about 1/2 hour north of Sacramento, CA. from this very same system when it was over California a couple of days ago. Plan to go on my first mid-west chase May 17-May 24.http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/5443/img1572ls1.jpg

Here is the short report before I sleep. I'll do a whole deal up later.

I tried to bust, I really did. I'd say I should have, but I had some luck out there waiting around for a while now, and I'd say that's what this mostly was. Anyway, short part.....

I drove back west to Grant to check on my storm I'd been waiting on for what seemed like forever. I thought it was pointless behind the stuff to the southeast, but it became tornado warned so I went back to check it out. Before I got to Grant and before I could really see any structure on the thing, I see a large tornado on the ground. I tried to video tape it as I moved west further. These start after that part on the east side of Grant looking sw, then west.

http://www.extremeinstability.com/stormpics/2007/07-3-28-0617.jpg
It was doing some pretty wild things with small and larger vorticies under this bowl. I didn't do well at capturing the larger ones with the still cam(I was doing stills and video....or at least trying to).

http://www.extremeinstability.com/stormpics/2007/07-3-28-0626.jpg
Same spot but now looking west towards Grant.

http://www.extremeinstability.com/stormpics/2007/07-3-28-0635.jpg
It got rather large as it moved west of town. I left about right now and drove north with it. It stayed on the ground for a while longer, changing shapes, mostly large. I glanced at the video on the way back home and one pause it reminded me of Brady, but at night obviously, and without the same kind of storm structure, but the tube sure did make me think of that. It was even moving nw.

It wrapped in rain and just as fast a new area was spinning up to the se. This area soon had another tornado on the ground. This time it didn't last as long, but the funnel/cone tornado was there for a long time, just having a harder time staying down. I grabbed a pop at Ogallala before heading east, while it was still sort of there to my sw. I soon regretted doing this as the power flickered there. I get on I80 and the winds become ferocious. I was a bit fearful something was again spinning up se of the old area. It sounds like something did some damage to the west side of the town. Anyway, more later. Congrats to the large number of folks who bagged today and sorry to hear the dreadful fatalities that came with this day.

By the way this was a storm just north of the Benklemen stuff, crazy to hear there were large tornadoes south of this one that close.

Wow, what a trip, in more ways than one. I did get to witness the Booker, Texas/Beaver, Oklahoma wedge tornado. I got a few photographs that I will post sometime tomorrow. I didn't get into a very good position, so my photos are not of the tornado at it largest. I want to thank Joey Ketchum for nowcasting. If it wasn't for him, my day would not have been very eventful. I will post more later today, as I just got home a few minutes ago.

I started out by heading west towards my initial target of Pratt, Kansas. After arriving in Pratt, I checked data, and I determined that I would need to get as far south and west as I possibly could, if I was going to see anything during the daylight hours. I proceeded south through Coldwater, Kansas and then to Woodward, Oklahoma. I got as far southwest as Canadian, Texas, when I determined that the supercell northwest of town was my only hope. I zipped up 83 highway and then caught 23 highway. I headed north towards Booker, Texas, and as I was doing so, I got some good photos of a large wall cloud southeast of Booker. I proceeded north on 23 highway past Booker, and I saw a large tornado on the ground, approximaly 1-2 miles north-northeast of Booker, Texas. As I continued north on 23 highway, I did get some video, looking east, of the large wedge tornado. I turned eastbound on highways 270/412, and continued for about four miles. The tornado had already crossed the highway at this point, so I stopped and got some decent photos of it, as it continued moving north. Unfortunately, not too far from this location, the tornado caused two fatalities.

I traveled a little over 900 miles, and I was rewarded for my efforts. I will attempt to get some still caputures of my video posted to the Chase Log and Photos section of my website, when time permits.

The rest of my photos can be found here (http://www.russparsonspictures.com/20070328TX-OKTornado/).

I have been talking with Verne Carlson throught the night and early morning. He was out chasing with his son who is on spring break. They chased the Beaver OK wedge tornado that ended up killing 2 people.

Verne is on his way back to Denver now but I have posted the video up to YouTube for him.

Chased the tornadic storm that passed near Dodge City from its first updraft to Hodgeman Co. Saw 6 tornadoes from this storm and many funnel clouds over 2hr period. most of the larger tornadoes from this storm came after dark, so still pics did not come out only a few before dark. Added some damage shots from 1/2 mile wide tornado NW of Dodge City in Hodgeman Co. Also some video traps of tornado that was west of Dodge City. these are converted to B/W to add contrast to show tornadoes better.

I was on the storm in NW Kansas in Decator (not sure if that's spelled right) county. I only got one tornado. It was high contrast cone that was on the ground for 10-15 minutes. Oddly enough they didn't even have a severe thunderstorm warning out when I called the tornado in. It was showing strong rotation for a good 10 minutes before it produced so I don't know how that one slipped by the weather service. Anyways, not a bad day. I wish I would have gotten multiple tornadoes, but it's tough to complain when you get on a tornadic supercell in March. I'll post again with some video or pics when I get home this afternoon. Congratulations to everybody who bagged the tornadoes yesterday.

Caught the Booker/Beaver County tornado as it crossed the state line in to Beaver County and stayed with it until it hit the house north of US 270. I'm a state stringer for the Oklahoman so I had to break off and go cover the fatalities but I think the tornado roped out about six miles north of there. I did see one other tornado form and briefly touch down to the east and north of the first one. There was some damage reported near Mocaine and this second tornado may have caused that, I don't know.

The house and good-sized barn were completely destroyed. Bad scene. Wild night. 270 was shut down due to powerlines and the section roads were nothing but mud. I had to get back to Woodward so I could file before deadline so I locked the hubs, crossed my fingers and went muddin'. Took a while but I made it. Intense wind and rain on the way home.

My pics are up on the Oklahoman website and in today's metro edition but for the life of me I can't find a link to them on the Oklahoman website. I know they're there somewhere because someone posted a link to them in one of the local newspaper forums (pasted below).

I have to go back today for a follow-up story and I'll try to post some damage pics later.

TARGET WAS: Eastern Texas Panhandle. RESULT: WOWZA. The Marshall's first got on the Silverton storm and saw a tornado travel from about 10 SW of Silverton to just west of town. A second tornado then formed north of town and headed off the caprock. Since we ran out of road options, we dropped southeast to a second storm. Saw a highly visible, long track tornado travel from near Caprock Canyons State Park to southwest of Clarendon. We ended the chase between Hedley and McLean when it got dark. Each tornado had intermittent contact with the ground. Rather than calling them separate tornadoes, I counted only one tornado per mesocyclone. Thus, we saw three. Shot more than 100 slides and lots of video. Quickly making up for last years bustolas. TM

Crazy day.

Got to the target of McCook Ne as the watch areas went up. The Nebraska watch area was roadless and remote so we played the CO/KS line. The supercells went up and they went up quick. Unfortunately the cells did not start to spin until after dark. Saw some nice cells. We were headed for the St. Francis Bird City cell but we stopped to photo the sunset and there was no good aproach to that cell from our position anyhow. Half of the game was getting in position on one cell well another was coming up from the south, one that you would NOT be in good position for.

Extremely close for us, the sunset was the issue. One more hour of daylight and we could have just sat in place and watched three tornadoes pass by.

So heading into Goodland once the sun set and dodging tornadoes all the way. Once the sun sets we choose to dodge the tornadoes rather than chase them.

So no clear views or pics of an tornadoes for us. Still a nice day and some crazy fun.

Decided to hang west of my original target area and drive around the pastures of my home town. Started out with the Floydada cell and stuck to it like glue, it never really tickled my pickle but it tried. Other than that, I saw about the same as you guys. Congratulations damnit:D

Left Omaha 9:45 AM targeting Colby, KS. Ended up driving to Garden City before returning north along the dryline. This was my first chase in the high plaines and I hope not my last. This was awesome, we intercepted a supercell with history of tornadoes about 3mi east of Goodland, in the town of Edna. 6 tornadoes on tape after all was said and done unfortunately half of them were after dark including this monster wedge.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g157/Jason_McKittrick/GoodlandWedge1.jpg
We were able to follow this for over one hour on the ground before we ran out of good roads near Bird City, Ks. This began forming right over our heads near Edna. The only draw back to this chase was the $250 that I spent on gas.

Aaron and I ended up in Bird City (The only Bird City in the USA by the way...at least that is what their sign said) early in the afternoon waiting for initiation. We watched a couple of storms go up in Eastern Colorado but we decided to get on the storm that passed by Colby. We intercepted it about 10-15 miles North of Colby where it pretty much died down. We then headed to Goodland to catch the tornado warned storms in that area.

NW Kansas has really crappy road choices. It may be flat....but it doesn't matter if you can't get close to the storm. We tried to find a North/South road to get closer to the storm but we ended up just camping out on the side of the interstate watching it move in. The sun was setting but we still got treated to a pretty good show.

We watched a funnel and some massive rotation while the storm was South of the interstate, it passed almost directly overhead and then the tornado dropped again a little bit North of the interstate and we followed it for a little while. I was busy taking pictures of the sunset while my brother was recording the tornado....go figure :P We were going to follow the storm but decided to just head home as it was dark out by this time. The Ness County tornado warned storm gave us a pretty good lightning show on the way home...

It was a very fun chase day and we had the chance to see our first tornado of the year, which was satisfying. Hopefully next time we can be in better position with more daylight left, that's my goal. Our dad couldn't be with us for this chase unfortunately, but hopefully we get plenty more good setups this year.

Here are a few pictures:

The Goodland storm passing over the interstate at sunset:
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w84/tornadojunkies/IMG_7060.jpg

This was just south of the interstate... There was a lot of good rotation going on in there.
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w84/tornadojunkies/IMG_7023.jpg

Sorry for the crappy tornado picture. I promise to do better next time.

Arrived in the town of Grant in Perkins County Nebraska last night as the tornado sirens were going off and hail began to fall, had to take cover as power got knocked out and a large tornado just missed the town. After I felt safe I proceeded up highway 61 and shot video and took video grabs of a large cone tornado which lasted for quite some time! I've got 3 video grabs on my website with more to come shortly when I get back home. You can see these pics at easterniowastormchaser.com in the Latest Chase Section. What an EXCITING NIGHT!! :D Sorry to hear about those fatalities down south though my heart goes out to all those who were affected by yesterdays severe weather.

Charles Edwards, along with Mark McGowen, Matt Starkey and myself had one of the most spectacular chases ever. We witnessed at least 6 separate tornadoes, maybe as many as 8. These included the complete cycles of the Silverton tornado and the long tracked Briscoe/Donley County tornado that we saw from at least 12-13 miles away and passed us within a mile and a half from a high vantage point ... the video I captured is easily the best footage I have ever taken.

I'll have a more complete summary with stills and video's from Charles's Cloud 9 website hopefully within a day or two.
The only down side to this day was the lives who were adversely effected on this historic day. Otherwise, in my 25 years of chasing... hands down, this was the best.

Left Lubbock at 5pm and managed to catch what was originally the Floydada storm. We didn't see the large tornado reported near South Plains even though we were right on the wall cloud. But then it went off the caprock and seemed to go nuts. Not sure how many individual tornadoes, but I am sure that it doesn't matter. Good stuff.

It looks like the West Texas Mesonet station at McLean was hit by a tornado. According to WTM director Wes Burgett, the tower is bent but it took data through the whole ordeal...127mph peak gust and 9mb pressure drop. Check out the meteogram at http://www.mesonet.ttu.edu/temp/message_mclean.html.

My son Eric and I left Denver at 7:00am and after talking to Chris Rozoff decided that we could make the southern target in OK/TX. With nowcasting along the way by Tony Laubach we setup shop in Beaver County, OK and watched eagerly as the cells south of Amarillo went crazy. Late afternoon cells finally began to show some life in our area and a multi-cell passed over the county and split from the southern cell which quickly became a meso and began showing great structure over Booker, TX.

We watched a wispy touchdown east of Booker, TX, then a cone touching down, a landspout and cone on the ground at the same time and then a stout stovepipe tornado as the storm moved from TX into OK.

We headed north and shot east again and came over the hill at roughly the time the house with the 2 fatalities was hit. We learned about this later in the night and were not aware of this tragedy at the time.

We were able to pull right up the tornado as it went from a wedge into a double vortex that rotated around itself in the most amazing site I have ever seen. At this point the tornado retrograded west in the field just 1/8 mile from us.

We got easily 45 minutes of tornado footage from this supercell. What an amazing chase, although tempered by the 2 fatalities.

Have many more images to process and video to review.

Edit: coming home last night to Denver around 9pm we were going to go through Holly, CO and on to Pueblo and then north on I-25. The road was blocked by Emergenct Management, we thought it was because of flooding along the Arkansas River. We later learned about the Holly, CO tornado devastation.

Edit: Vance and Barbara Woodbury where the two people killed in this tornado, they were ranchers and had lived in Elmwood, OK all thier lives. Our hearts and prayers go out to thier family.

Very exhausting chase as I battled very poor roads and a POS video camera to keep up with the Bird City Tornado. I tracked the tornado right up to Bird City and drove through a portion of the town, it appeared that it was spared, just some minor tree damage and they were without power, but just to the East of Bird City I could not continue due to downed power lines and from there had a hard time keeping up with the tornado. To the NW of Bird City closer to the NE line I also came across what appeared to be another damage path as I had to zig zag around hay bells thrown all over and across the road, also came across baseball sized stones along that same road.

Just a couple of pics, more to come in the Future!!

Add me to the frenzy. I came late to the show, but still managed to pull out a number of tornadoes - some daylight, and some night. Talk about chaser convergence frenzy...it was pandemonium out there. I'll update later with pics as I have time. Checking out today, tomorrow, and the next. Congrats to the rest of you. Man this was an incredible day!!!

Dan Dawson, Robin Tanamachi, Gabe Garfield, Kim Klockow, Gerard Jebaily, myself, and others share a similar story to many. We waited in Shamrock for a good deal of the afternoon until bailing on the split supercell amidst reports of a tornado with the cell southwest of the Silverton / near Floydada. By the time we made it down there, the southernmost storm was coming up from the South Plains area, and we stopped at an excellent location NNW of Turkey. We watched the relatively long-lived tornado west of Hwy 70 (SW of Brice) with what seemed like everyone else and their parents. With the storm moving NNE, we opted to head to Clarendon, then east towards Hedley. Along the way, we saw a brief touchdown just south of 287 ESE of Lelia Lake / W of Hedley (after experience nickel to quarter size hail). The storm transitioned to the wet side of classic (or even HP) for a little while thereafter. We saw extremely rapid rotation SSW of McLean for quite some time, and we confirmed at least one respctable stovepipe tornado a few miles SSW of McLean. Like others, we experienced golf-ball sized hail near McLean (we saw larger on the ground), and, while getting onto I40 east from McLean, we saw very bright power flashes as a substantial tornado moved just north of I40. Though it was dark, we continued with the supercell northward to Kellerville. While just south of Kellerville, we saw a large tornado to our distant NNW, lit only occassionally by lightning. After looking and reading reports (I'll have to match up time), it appears that this tornado may have been the one SW of Mobeetie. Gas and bathroom concerns took us to Wheeler, which was out of power. So, with little confidence in finding a gas station nearby, and radar showing decreasing intensities, we opted to call off the chase and head home via Shamrock and I40... Shamrock was a zoo, owing to the fact that I40 westbound was closed between McLean and Shamrock. We finally made it back to OUN around 2am.

Overall, of course, this was a very successful chase. We almost got bit by staying around the Shamrock crap-vection too long. Fortunately, timing worked out quite nice, as did the favorable storm motion relative to Hwy 70 near and south of Clarendon. In the end, we are very confident in seeing 5 tornadoes (I know I only mentioned 4 above -- I can't remember the 5th at this time), and we may have seen up to 7. I'll obviously need to look through video and photos later to more thoroughly document (time+location) each tornado. We also only ran across 2-3 bozos who decided that it was fine to stop and park on the road. It never ceases to amaze me how folks think they can stop in the lane, park, and get our of their vehicle(s). Seriously... For the most part, however, most chasers/spotters/locals I saw parked well off the roadway. It was a little tricky at times given the muddy shoulders that yielded potential for getting stuck, however.

I was surprised to see the storm make such little eastward progress, particularly considering the southwesterly mid- and upper-level flow on the 00z AMA sounding (which was more veered than I was expecting, even that far south). It is quite amazing to see 3000+ j/kg SBCAPE in the panhandles and high plains this early in the year, that's for sure!

Basically, targeted Plainview, TX. My first storm initiated about 15 miles to my south and I intercepted it to the SE. Got the first tornado just east of Plainview near Aiken, and continued to get tornado after tornado until I was forced to let it slide when I got to the Canyon at Silverton. I watched twin tornadoes slide off into the rain from the north side of Silverton.

Backtracked south a little and intercepted a new storm and followed it to I40. A bad road choice around the Caprock Canyons state park prevented me the views some people got of the long lived tornado there, but I did still get to see it.

I've finished a 7 minute clip from the chase yesterday. Awesome storm, HOT DRY RFD, I can't stress this enough. Have video from wall cloud to multi-vortex to skinny needle, to truncated cone to cone to stovepipe. Longest tornado I've witnessed on the ground. The structure was incredible, unfortunately we didn't get a great shot of the mothership meso because it was very dark when we stopped chasing the tornadoes and got enough room for a wide angle storm shot. Total of 5 tornadoes, 2 after dark which were very ominous and damaging up along I-40 near McLean.

Enough banter, here's the link:

Walt Gish, Eric Sipes and I left Cordell, OK at 1pm for Childress, TX and a brief data stop after which we proceeded to our target area at Quitaque. We paused there for a while watching towers go up and monitoring radar until we made the choice to intercept the storm that was rapidly developing near Plainview. We were in position on SR 378 just S of Lone Star when it dropped its first tornado at 5:15pm. The tornado dissipated rather quickly and after 6-7 minutes a second developed from the same wall-cloud. Then road options forced us to backtrack a bit and we caught up with the storm again at Silverton, filming the stovepipe that passed to the NW from a point just E of town. Heading E on 256 we intercepted the storm coming up from Floydada and filmed the entire life-cycle of the Caprock Canyon tornado, much of it from the jct of 256 and 70. Following the storm N to Clarendon we blasted ESE to our next N option near Hedley and followed 273 to McLean, filming several tornadoes on the way as darkness fell, including a very large, partially rain-wrapped wedge. At McLean we quickly drove E on I-40 and headed N on the Kellerville road and stopped to film what appeared to be yet another large tornado with satellites. Broke off the chase at around 9pm. Review of video shows we filmed at least 9 tornadoes, perhaps more--in the darkness, illumined only briefly by lightning, it isn't always easy to determine exactly what one is seeing.

Crazy day, easily my best chase so far. Caught the Brice tornado and watched it from touchdown to roping out from the backlit perspective - about 5-6 miles to the east (2 E Brice). Wish I would've gotten closer before setting up the camera and such, but coming down towards the US-70/TX-256 intersection we ran into some sizeable hail and I decided I wanted to get a bit east and avoid it - bad move in the end, as it would've been well worth some dents to get a closer vantage point! Pics to come shortly.

Similar story as everyone else. We stayed in Childress until initiation, then intercepted the storm near Silverton. Followed it as far north as possible before breaking off to go back and catch the southern storm. At one point we took a short dirt road that was actually just mud. Gravity pulled the vehicle sideways into the ditch, which was full of water. I was able to keep the vehicle moving and drive out of the ditch about 1/4 mile later, but I thinkthe 2 ft deep water or something in it we hit damaged the engine because about 9pm the engine started knocking and died. We were towed back to OKC. It was worth it, though!

All I can say about Wednesday is WOW! WOW! WOW!
This is a brief summary of my chase. I will post my full report on my chase blog later today.
I left home at 11:15 a.m. and made it to my preliminary target of Ogallala, NE by 1:30. I spent the next one and a half hours gathering data at the City Library and watching and waiting and talking with Brett Adair, who was nowcasting for me. I started noticing convection beginning to develop along the DL in extreme eastern CO, so I decided to head further south, so I left Ogallala at 3:00 p.m. MST and dropped down Highway 61 through southwestern NE, passing through Grant, Imperial and Benkelman before I saw nice towers going up about 40 miles to my west, so I booked it west on Highway 34. I arrived in Haigler around 5:30 p.m. and drove a short distance south of Haigler on Highway 27 and watched from the top of a hill as a spectacular classic supercell moved out of Yuma County, CO into far western Dundy County, NE.
At 5:40 p.m.,the storm developed a nice wall cloud and dropped a brief, but pretty backlit rope tornado approximately ten miles north/northwest of Haigler around 6:35 p.m. MDT. The tornado lasted about a minute, and I took several pictures which I will post later. This supercell would later go on to produce several spectacular tornadoes near Grant, NE an hour later. I could have chased it, but my truck was running low on fuel and the Co-op in Haigler was closed, so I had to hustle back to Wray to fuel up. While I was filling up, new convection exploded along the DL. Brett informed me about the tornadic supercell moving out of Sherman County, KS, so I hauled ass back east on Highway 34. I punched through the developing line of supercells and caught a few golf balls and some blinding rain west of Haigler. As I got closer to Benkelman, significant anvil blowoff from the tornadic supercell was creating a fog that so constantly lit up by the lightning from the supercells that were literally surrounding me in all directions it was glowing. That made for a very surreal and eerie drive. I arrived in Benkelman and started down Highway 161 but quickly turned around as reports of the wedge started coming in. At Brett's suggestion I decided to move further east to the town of Max, NE, which is about eight miles east of Benkelman. I made a u turn about a mile east of Max and parked my truck. I took video of the lightning backlit multi-vortex tornado as it crossed into Nebraska, just missed Benkelman to the southeast and crossed U.S. 34 east of town at 8:35 p.m. MDT.
After the tornado had crossed the highway, I drove back towards Benkelman and drove through the damage path about two miles east of Benkelman, where parts of several trees and a powerpole were lying in the road.
I drove through Benkelman and observed some significant hail damage on the south and east side of town. While I was on the south edge of town, I observed two more brief tornadoes from a circulation passing about ten miles to the west of Benkelman. It was then that I made a decision to drive south to Bird City on Highway 161. What transpired next was a chaser's worst nightmare, a blunder that could have been deadly...
Tune in later today for the thrilling conclusion!

I'm still trying to break down my video of the night time wedge tornado and mayhem, It appears that I didn't get a whole lot of good video of the wedge Tornados even though visually I constantly had a good view; however if I slow down the tape and watch it in slow motion quite frequently you can see it, I did find a spot when there was a power flash that illuminates the huge tornado. I put the 1 second clip which shows the flash and ends quick enough so that you can still barely make out the tornado. Its at the bottom of the page.

Started the day in Lubbock (after flying into LBB night before). Parked south of Floydada, TX for a bit before heading to Aiken, TX. Somewhere north of there (Providence?) saw my first funnel within in seconds after getting pulled out of some mud on the shoulder - thank you Glen! The funnel passed almost overhead and I would guess is the same cell that later became the Silverton tornado witnessed by everyone. Spent some time in Silverton -- basically 'cat and mousing' David Drummond's path; and made the same mistake of taking 86 south of the Caprock (instead of 256). Decided to head back thereafter so probably missed quite a bit around Brice and Clarendon. Still my first tornado and catching the funnel at the start was incredible (and lucky).

Pictures with date/time (DSC files) were taken with a cameraphone (Sony K790a) and no date stamp(IMG files) Canon Rebel XT.

RJ Evans, Gene Rhoden and I saw at least four tornadoes from the Silverton-Brice-McLean tornadic supercell and numerous funnels.

The headline for us is great recovery. We missed the first few tornadoes from the initial northern storm between South Plains and Clarendon and the first tornadoes from the southern storm around Quitique/Silverton, but recovered southwest in time for some great shots. Thanks to Tim Marshall for calling Gene with the initial tornado report that kicked us into high gear.

Our highlight was a close view of a cone-elephant trunk-rope tornado a few miles southwest of South Brice, TX. At one point, the multi-vortex debris cloud was lit by bright sunlight less than a mile to our west and the entire funnel took on a zebra appearance. We shot great video and stills from high vantage point of looking down into the Mulberry creek/river valley. According to Gene's digital photo times, the tornado touched down at 1843 CDT and ended around 1915 CDT. It moved pretty slow, only about 15 mph we estimate.

We also saw a truncated cone-stovepipe-elephant trunk tornado after dark from about about 3-5 miles south of McLean, TX from this same supercell. The tornado just missed McLean to the west, while a new tornado touched down on the east edge of town and moved north. McLean dodged a bullet.

This new tornado hit the west TX Mesonet site on the northeast edge of McLean with a 127mph 3-second wind gust and 9 mb pressure drop. Pictures of the damaged mesonet site can be seen here:

http://www.mesonet.ttu.edu/temp/McLean_tornado_28March2007/message_mclean.html

RJ's Personal Mobile Mesonet Project (PMMP) data logs can be viewed here:
http://pmmpdurango.com/Data07Temp.html

We sampled this storm's environment quite well. Around 0050z, on TX273 between Headley and McLean, we measured a period with inflow sustained ESE at 40-50mph.

Here's a description of RJ's vehicle:
http://www.pmmpdurango.com/

This supercell and others apparently formed on an elevated nw-se oriented boundary in the Crosby-Floydada area. At first, it appeared the left splits might ruin the show, but the great environment won out. This boundary was a tornadic supercell factory with multiple hooks noted over the ern Panhandle. Not sure what this was associated with, but the models predicted this convection accurately. Gene calls it a wave. Was it an elevated dryline bulge that intersected a NW-SE boundary between AMA-CDS? Moisture funneling up the Palo Duro Canyon? Who knows! Fascinating!

Special thanks to RJ for saving us from a crash while departing Oklahoma City near the I-44/I-40 junction. A truck in front us of slammed on his brakes and swerved into our lane. RJ swered onto the shoulder to miss him. Our hearts missed a beat or two on that one.

I'm not going to go into detail here, since everyone else already did :) I caught the same stuff that most everyone else caught, from Silverton, Briscoe county, and on into Hedley and north. Beautiful storm structure, awesome tornadoes and full accounts, pics and videos willbe up on my web site this weekend at www.stormchase.net (http://www.stormchase.net)

Did have a VERY VERY close encouter west of Hedley as a tornado developed just south of town. VERY VERY close to the tornadic circulation! Not on purpose either LOL!

After visiting Nebraska twice and a stop in Minnesota in the last 2 weeks I finaly hit chaser
Nirvana in NW Kansas Wednesday. While dropping south from my original Nebraska target I
partnered up with Skip Talbot near Norton KS as convection fired southwest of Colby. I believe we sampled at
least three cells as we dropped down the line to the tornado warned cell north of Shannon Springs.
We managed to catch this cell without getting stuck in the mud to
watch this beatiful storm really come together. We saw one tornado in the rain and a well formed funnel
just after parking near the storm. As we traveled north to keep up with the storm Skip came over the
radio and commented about how great the sun was lighting the storm features and that
now would be a great time to get another tornado. My reply was "ask and you shall receive". Well,
minutes later as we crossed I-70 and past the town of Edson the storm developed a beautiful sunlit
tornado. After that jawdropper we continued on as darkness fell. We quickly went east to find a
north road that paralleled the storm fairly well.It was during the next hour that we got to see
another tornado as well as two tornadoes at the same time and finally the wedge near Bird City.

After driving all the way to Ama from Norman, we went back to Shamrock and then turned around again to head back for the storm over Caprock Canyons/ Silverton area. I had my doubts about making to that storm on time. Not only did we get there in time, we got some great seats for the multivortex as it really got going. West of Hedley we experienced baseball size hail, it was kinda soft hail. It would shatter real easy and didnt leave many dents, and small dents at that. Cracked my headlight case though. It wasnt till after it was north Hedley in Donley County that this storm really went to work. Along highway 273, we saw a funnel come down around the back edge of the meso. As it came around, it reshaped into a large bowl and came down in the valley next to us. The whole valley just looked like it exploded as the dust went flying into the air. The roar of this tornado was incredible. As it began to track north toward Mclean we could see it when lightning would illuminate it couple miles in front of us off the highway maybe a mile. Alot of chasers were moving directly next to this thing. It became a very wide and short stovepipe. Thankfully this thing lifted just before Mclean and the I-40 region. We were getting really worried because it had a bullseye on McLean.
Another large tornado followed soon after. It touch down on the far SE edge of McLean causing a power flash that knocked out the Mclean's power. At this point we were just trying to stay behind the storm as safely as possible. We took highway 453 through Pakan east of McLean. Saw a couple other possible large tornadoes backlight by the crazy lightning, one of which was near Kellerville. These storms were lit up much better than the SE KS storms on Feb 28, but the road networks just were not good enough to risk staying with this storm especially seeing the size of tornadoes they were putting out. The animals were going crazy in this area. We about ran into a big group of dear and a crazy raccoon before making it back to the interstate to head home.
I will never forget this chase. I went from seeing no funnels, let alone any tornadoes, over the past 2 years to having a tornado count somewhere around 15 just through March on just 4 chases (3 very successful ones).

Here are a couple pics,

Departed Austin about 8:15 a.m. Caught the Silverton tornado shortly before it dissipated just NW of Caprock Canyon. I was well north of the cell when TOR warnings first went up, following another cell which pulsed down shortly after I comitted to it. Driving SW towards Silverton, I caught some pretty nice views of the extremely distant wall cloud, lowerings, and tornado(s). I was roughly 40-45 miles NE of the storm when I first saw what the wall cloud. Definitely the most distant WC/TOR I have ever witnessed. Vidcap from roughly 20 miles NE of the storm:

And later, when I emerged from Caprock Canyon, as the Silverton tornado ropes out:

From there, dropped south to pick up the cell entering southern Briscoe County. Story here is the same as many others. Beautiful tornado- wish I could have gotten a little closer. These pics are from a digita still camera with NO manual focus:

I hope to get some stills up from my Video soon. The video camera malfunctioned a couple of times during this tornado, but I still got a lot of video from it. Video camera is malfunctioning again today (on my waste-of-a-chase in Central TX). Vidcaps should look a little better than the stills, and I'll post them when I get the camera working again.

Also got up to just West of Mclean at sunset (after guessing wrong and gonig North from the chaser convergence zone in South Brice). Observed some lightning illuminated funnels as the cell crossed I-40, and got some low-light video of those also.

Congrats to all those lucky enough to be out there Wednesday. This event definitely eased the pain of my recent 3/23 1360 mile bust (I have spared the forum members a report from that debacle).

Here's a vid cap of the second McLean, TX tornado backlit by lightning at 8:50 PM. It was north of I-40 at the time and was taken from I-40 and FM453 a few miles to the east.

McLean "west" tornado about 8:14 PM shot from about 5 miles south of McLean on SR 273:

Earlier in the day, the long-lived tornado between Silverton and Brice at about 6:54 PM:

My full slate of vidcaps here (http://www.cycloneroad.com/2007march28.htm).

Eric Nguyen and I chased this event and witnessed around six tornadoes between Silverton and McLean, from 6:29 PM until we broke off the nighttime stovepipe about 8:25 PM.

I was excited about this chase a few days in advance because it seems like a long time since we've seen a vigorous dryline circulation mix into extreme instability. Feels like we've been plagued with pre-frontal surface troughs and veering winds ahead of the lift creating weak convergence. Not so Wednesday.

We began in Claude, bored enough to chase that first "sucker" storm well east of the dryline, but turned around in time to follow SR 70 southbound on the "tour of tornadoes". We were lucky to find good vantage points at the right time.

Like others that night, we found ourselves in a precarious spot while northbound on 273 as a new tornado devloped beneath a meso immediately east of the road. Momentarily we mistook strong RFD into this developing tornado for the stovepipe's circulation.

After checking around, I think I might have been the ONLY person who has video of the Benkelman, NE tornado.:D
There was a college guy and girl from Grand Island who were on the storm as well (nice kids, can't remember their names:confused:) but they had no still or video camera with them. After watching the video, I realize just how badly I need a new camcorder... I shot the video with a seven year old Panasonic Palmcorder VHS-C. The video itself is pretty decent quality, but getting any somewhat decent stills is going to be difficult... grrrr.

Just noticed that this is my 300th post... break out the champagne and fireworks! Well, I'd settle for some ginger ale and confetti... :)

I have a few night images captured from video of the tornado (possibly tornadoes). The first was taken about 5 miles south of mclean, tx. The second image was about 3 miles south of Mclean, tx. And the third was taken just east of Mclean at mile marker 143 at precisely 8:30 pm. The nearbyTexas Mesonet station was hit a few minutes later which i was able to find about where the tornado crossed the road relative to me. I calculated that I was .9 miles west of the tornado. Im having issues getting the gif to work correctly. Video coming soon...

Also check out our youtube site for more video of the tornado as seen from Chitaque Turkey Caprock Canyons and Brice Texas areas. We also have other storm vidoes from March posted as well.

It was a pleasure to chase with the holytornado.com guys (Jeremy Wilson and wife) and also thanks to AMA for their radar images of the event. I always like to go back and check what the radar was looking like while out on the chase besides looking at Mobile Threat Net XM radar.

Also congrats to Jeremys wife for her first tornadoes! Wow what a first set of tornadoes to have!

I finally got around to writing a chase report and uploading processed versions of my photos from 3/28. I wasn't in the right spot to get the jaw-dropping close-up shots of the Brice tornado quite a few of you have, but still like the way some of them came out thanks to my telephoto lens.

This was my second tornado day and both times I was in the backlit position. I think the contrast makes for some great photos, but at the same time I'd love to get on the southwest side on my next intercept. I still can't get over the great detail and coloration in the photos and video posted here from those who followed the tornado from the south.

Two supercells to the west and southwest from TX-70 north of Brice:

Short summary: Left a bit late 1pm for the Tx Panhandle but still had time to join in on the chaser
fun time. After getting stuck in the mud, I originally began seeing tornadoes from near Turkey, Tx.
Got in at the end of the Sheriff road block / controversy and exited east toward new development.
Stuck behind chaser convergence lines and at times blinding light bars near / at night I witnessed
additional tornadoes. Near McLean. Had difficulty shooting video and stills in dark and while zig
zagging down the road as I chased alone, so I need to work on some options / techniques there. A fun
chase, and I still need to review whatever video I got from this event. Congratulations to everyone
out that day even if you were in my way ;-) LOL! Following is the traditional detailed account which
is also linked off my website.

Ditto... just got around to uploading the few photos of the Holly, CO tornado damage. Didn't have my digital with me, so had to just use the point-n-shoot film camera, so had to wait for film processing. Anyway, here are a few from the night of the Holly, CO tornado:

No pictures of the storm, as I was too late in getting there. We had to backtrack all the way back to Limon, just to find a place to stay for the night.
Law enforcement had most of the town closed off, and I respected that, so just snapped a few shots on the south side of the highway.
Power was out, so the photos are quite blurry. Sad there was a fatality in that town.

Okay, finally able to post on here so here goes. I and my two chase partners made the trip to around Dodge City and managed to get on the storm that produced the wedge northwest of Dodge. Was a very active night of chasing and we managed to get a few night time shots of that cell. The files are too large to post here so I have them here (http://sekchasers.blogspot.com/)

Gene Thieszen, Walt Gish, and I left Cordell around 1p.m. for Childress, TX. After a data update we set our target area for Quitique, TX. We sat there and waited for things to develope then headed out toward Lone Star where we caught our first tornado. We followed the first storm up toward Silverton where we ran out of road options and were forced to take the southern storm near the Caprock Canyon. All in all we recorded 12 tornadoes!!!:D

I finally got around to editing my video from March 28; I've added my video of the Brice, TX tornado to YouTube. The full life-cycle of the tornado is included.

Enjoy!
