View Full Version : What months have you caught tornadoes?

Here is another thread the stats haters should enjoy. I've wondered about this one a few times, wondering if there is any chaser that has seen a tornado in each month. It seems like a fun goal to shoot for....sort of. There are lots of chasers out there that chase A LOT and I'd think someone should maybe have this or be very close, but that said, I bet no one does yet. Roger? Cosgrove? Moore? December has to be the toughest month, no?

I haven't seen an excessive amount of tornadoes for as long as I've chased, but I've got a good coverage of months now. The ones I'm still missing are September(doh....but, it's not a great month), December, January, and February. I think that is it.

States is another fun thread, but I'll let someone else start that if they want.

I would bet that Warren Faidley would have to be close to that.. Warren?

I've caught 3 tornados in May, and 7 tornados in June

May 5, 2002: F1 tornado near Seiling, Oklahoma

May 4, 2003: F3 tornado near Baxter Springs, KS
June 11, 2004: two tornado near Fort Dodge, Iowa
June 12, 2004: 3 tornados from the Mulvane area supercell including the F3
June 13, 2004: 2 tornados from the storm near Alvo, Nebraska, including a borderline wedge.

Warren only chases tornados during the main months of April, May, and June. After that he concentrates on hurricnes then the monsoon season back in Arizona. At least thats how used to have his schedule set when we chased together.

I still need tornados in Nov, Dec, Jan. I needed Feb until this year. Not the best time of year in the panhandle in winter. Think I will have to go to the far SE states or australia to catch those 3 months.

The only months I am needing to complete my 12 pack are July, August, and December. I have all of the other months checked off my list. May still ranks #1 followed by June, and then more distantly April and September.

May 30, 2001 - F0 landspout tornado near Wichita Falls, TX
June 24, 2003 - Centerville, SD tornado outbreak
June 27, 2005 - Brief tornado 20 miles to the west of Valentine, NE

Thus far South Dakota has been my state to see tornadoes in.

I'm just needing January and July to complete the cycle. Hopefully the Canadian Prairies will be kind to us this year.

I'm not even close, but yeah, the southeast would be the area typically for November - February. This winter's a prime example with the tornados in Florida Christmas Day and January, and Alabama/Georgia/Florida just barely into March. But don't rule out Arkansas (sorta southeast). I lived in Cabot in '82 and had to take shelter on Christmas Eve. I was also in school in southeast Arkansas during a January outbreak in '99. It would have been bigger news that year were it not for May 3rd. And don't forget Dumas this year. Much of that state is very difficult chase terrain - give me the Mississippi flood plain or none of it!

Getting a tornado in every month is actually one of my big goals. I need January, July, August, October, and December.

I need January, February, March, November, and December. My best late season chase was the Halloween 2000 outbreak in NW Kansas/SW Nebraska.

I would have to spend more time than I'm willing to to determine numbers for each month, but these are the months I can think of off the top of my head...
February
March
April
May
June
July
November

Mike H., I'll trade you my Dec. 2, 1999 Perry, OK tornado for one of your November catches. I guess trades don't apply here...oh well, it was worth a shot.

May, June, August. Since I've learned my lessons about chasing early- and late-season, I won't go after anything with a storm speed of over 40 mph, and that limits the months I'll go out.
