I remember that in my Synoptic class, my professor gave us this really handy "checklist"-like thing to help us with forecasting winter weather. I went looking on the net to see if I could find anything that concisely explained a lot of the stuff that we learned about forecasting winter wx, and I found this powerpoint that explains some concepts:
