Any regular members who want to participate in the Educational Forum may request posting privileges by responding here.
To participate you must commit to:
(1) Participate regularly, and
(2) Treat ALL participants with the absolute highest courtesy. No question is too dumb to ask in the Educational Forum. It is not a place to bring up controversial topics or criticize other chasers.
It may take anywhere from 1 to 7 days to get you added.
There are no restrictions on reading the forum, so we ask that you don't request posting privileges unless you really intend to use them.

Is it just to ask and answer questions? Any guidelines or directives needed or what can and cannot be posted?
David Drummond

It's a place where new chasers or aspiring chasers can ask any question they want and get it answered by experienced chasers, and not feel too intimidated as they might posting in the general forum, or feel like they might face some ridicule for posting a question on something very basic.
The idea is to have a mentoring type area for those experienced chasers that wish to help mentor new folks, while allowing those that don't want to be able to avoid it.
Lots of new folks have a lot of basic questions they would like answered. Stuff experienced chasers know by heart now, sometimes forget it was once new ground for us too.
My hope that this will help foster relationships between more experienced chasers with new people coming in to the hobby, much in the same way that ham radio helps "elmer" (a mentor) new hams. Hopefully this will extend in to the physical world allowing new chasers someone to learn from in the field as well.
I had the thought that this might be a good approach to introducing new people to the world of storm chasing through a teaching philosophy, rather than a preaching philosophy.

I would definitely like access for both answering and asking I'm a 'expert' novice or a novice intermediate or somewhere in there. After 5 years I've chased quite a bit to answer the basic questions but I still have a ton of questions of my own to be asked ;)

This is a great idea! But do I qualify? I'm not a newbie, but neither am I an old pro. I've been chasing a while and have experienced modest success these past two years, but I still have a lot to learn about forecasting. This year I finally participated in some of the forecast and post-op discusssions, but I've felt a bit intimidated, knowing how much I still don't know. Would this forum be for me too? If so, sign me up.

Similar mentoring forums I've been in have often assigned or designated areas of expertise to participants. While I have opinions and observations about some things I'm certainly not the best one to give them. My areas of relative expertise are in the zen of model interpretation, traffic and transportation issues, data archiving, and southwest US weather.
Eric Flescher

David
That listing of topic ideas is a good one so (1) those who have questions can know the target question range ; (2) where the questions would go (possibly overlapping ); (3) would help the answerers targeted to people who ask questions
will there be several parts of the this thread or just one (I have not look elsewhere on this thread - sorry about duplication)

Shane Adams
12-14-2007, 07:49 AM
No, I'm able to post but when I submitted it, a window popped up that said it was waiting for approval. Before you added me, I saw a "lock" on the forum indicating I couldn't post, but once you added me the lock disappeared. So my impression was that posts had to be approved.

Just an FYI, I just posted to the Educational forum and I got the same "waiting approval" message as the first time. Is this a standard procedure? Seems like once you're approved the first time you'd be good to go.

As I said in my previous post... I tried to change the permissions so it wouldn't do that (require moderation). When I changed it for that forum, for some reason it allowed the mod/admin forum to be visible as well, which is obviously not acceptable. Thus it was changed back. I didn't set the area up, and can't figure out why it's doing that, so I am waiting for Tim to come along and take a look since he set the area up.
So please stop looking for something sinister to be offended about Tyler. It's simply a technical glitch that will eventually get worked out. Sometimes it really is just a glitch.
In the mean time, go ahead and post there. As myself or the mods come by they will approve all posts there.

I can take that punch in the face David but I still have no answer to my question or more to the point - have no access to post. I all to understand the "limited time" factor but you have posted many posts in the past week all while we could have been added a little sooner.
Not criticizing I just want to be able to post.
Mick
David Drummond
01-31-2008, 01:20 PM
The point was, I have very limited amounts of time to do things on StormTrack. When that time gets taken up dealing with stuff like happened yesterday, and then someone complains because I didn't get something else done they wanted me to do, that's a kick in the groin.
Keep in mind we have lives too and we all volunteer whatever time we work on here. Between the 10 emails I had in my personal email box about someone going crazy on ST, the two Instant Messages about in on my Yahoo, and then having to figure out what the hell was going on (which thankfully Jeff had already been working on), I spend well over an hour with that little spat yesterday. When valuable time is wasted on BS like that, other cool things I would like to work on get pushed aside.
So what, I am now no longer supposed to make a post until I have taken care of whatever anyone else wants me to? Takes me seconds to post. It's a little more than changing zeros to ones to add people to that forum.
And to be specific, it was EXACTLY a week ago you posted asking for access, not over a week.
Mickey Ptak
01-31-2008, 01:33 PM
