What is the most single-season snowfall you ever had for your area?

89.1 inches here in Chicago back in 77-78 I think.

121.4" winter of 96-97. The ensuing floods in the spring devastated Fargo ND and Grand Forks. Also had an air temp recorded of -49. Every time the wind blew, everything drifted shut. When the roads were open, never had to worry about going in the ditch as most had a 3' to 6' "tunnel" to drive in. Most counties and townships had to hire private heavy construction companies to aid in snow removal to keep the main passages open.

First off, I sure do love this winter weather discussion board.. an awesome add Tim! Thanks.

As for me, The winter of '95-'96 back in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan. A whopping 325" at the Houghton County airport. Some places had alot more. Unofficial reports of close to 400" that year in central Keweenaw County near the town of Delaware. I think officially that year, they had around 350" or so.

It started snowing around the third week of Oct. and that started a 50+ streak of days with NO sunshine. December was the worst that month with about 120" at my house near Chassell.. it snowed everyday up ontil just before Christmas with at least 4 or 5 days having over a foot.

By March of '96.. we had snow up to 5 feet deep, I had to regularly shovel out my satellite dish just so it could move. By the end of May when I came back from chasing there still was snow in the woods and the trees were just starting to bud out.

As much as I love winter, that was overkill and was part of the reason why we moved initially to Okla

101" in Bismarck ND the winter of 1996-1997 (same as Bill D). The entire state saw between 80" and 120" that winter... pretty unusual, especially for western sections which are semi-arid. The last hurrah in early April dumped 18-24" across west and central (killing 100,000 head of cattle), with very heavy rain in the east changing to snow. This of course set the stage for the Red River flooding.

We had about 90 inches in the winter of 96-97 when I was living in Brookings, SD. I remember parts of Interstate 29 between Brookings and Sioux Falls looking almost like driving through a tunnel- the snow was so deep on both sides that you literally couldn't see the cars in the other directional lanes. I also recall record low temperatures being hit several times that winter, with even some record low highs--I was commuting to Watertown, SD for college at that time, and I recall one day where the afternoon high temperature in Watertown was a balmy -25 degrees.

390" fell in the town of Delaware during the Winter of 78-79. http://www.johndee.com/history.htm Note: Snowfall measurements there are only taken once a day....lake effect snow tends to settle quickly so the 390" significantly understimates what actually fell there. (Note: The only other town near the Great Lakes that compares to that is the town of Hooker East of Lake Ontario on the Tug Hill Plateau with 466.9 inches, about 39 feet, falling in 1976-77.)

Gaylord, MI in the lower penisula near where I have my second home comes in with a more modest lake induced 210" in back 1971 although the snowbelt just West of town where my cottage lies undoubtedly received several feet more than that.
