Yesterday, I had a problem with my Cannon Digital Rebel.
There is a little mirror behind the main mirror that was flipped out blocking the view. This happened just as the storms got interesting. I was able to manually flip the mirror back up against the back of the other mirror and it worked the rest of the night.
Has anybody had this problem before? Should I have it looked at or replaced?

Hey Charles, the problem your describing will gradually become worse with time. I would pic a down time to send it back to Canon, it will take about 4 weeks total to get it shipped to them and have it back in your hand. Canon has a set fee they charge regardless of the issue. The fee is 195.00 they will fix your current problem but also overhaul and refurb the rest of the camera. Once the camera comes back I would bet that it will also be tacking sharper images as well. The camera will also have another warranty put on it by Canon.

Sounds like the pentaprism mirror that flips open as the shutter clicks. You might want to have someone take a look before you really need the thing in a chase. If it gets stuck down, the sensor won't be able to get an image during the shot. I'd shoot a hundred or so test shots in the meantime -

Note that if your camera is less than a year old, Canon will fix it for free. Just call them; they'll give you the address to mail it to. Once they get it, it'll be back in your hands within a couple days; they work very fast.

Unfortunately, it is well over a year old. (almost 4 years old) I decided I can't trust it to chase and can't be without for very long at this time of year, so I went ahead and ordered a new and better one.

Thats the very reason why I have no less then 2 camera bodies at all times.

If you ordered the XSi, color me jealous ... I got the XTi last year and am way satisfied with it, but XSi looks even better to me. Perfect chase camera -

Indeed, the XSI is excellent. The kit lens that comes with it, believe it or not, is actually rather good, too.
