I have been running my Garmin 2620 into my PC and then using Franson GPS Gate to Gibson Ridge. I am thinking of getting the Garmin PC software and run it also. I am needing some input from persons using this on a PC. I am hoping to have a larger screen map to see roads on the chase. Do you find the PC mapping a bit easier to use? Does this tie up a lot of memory on the PC or not?
Thoughts on this please...........

I've been experimenting with Garmin PC for a "carputer" project. It has a nice display and can use the same mapsource files as other Garmin products. It runs well enough on slower PC's, although I would recommend at least 1GB of memory for best performance. The interface is very simplified which is nice when mobile since you don't want to be fumbling around with small buttons or menu items. The maps themselves are very good and outshine what you would see on a smaller GPS display.
I'm not sure if I would recommend it for chasing or not.. the style of display lends itself more to trip planning or finding directions around town rather than the "rolling map" type display that Delorme or S&T would give you.. but that's just a personal impression.

I've been running Garmin nRoute on my car computer for a couple of years and when I return to my wife's mobile Garmin unit, I find it lacking now. Like you had mentioned, the larger screen is wonderful and I can switch between travel mode and the Topo map when I'm in the middle of nowhere which help when planning an escape route. (The 14" touchscreen doesn't hurt either!)
I run GPSGate with SwiftWX and sometimes WeatherTap at the same time and have had no issues so far. Not sure of the memory footprint but I usually also have iTunes and my browser open as well on a 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo machine with 2Gb of memory.

I am not sure what you are after since I have never used the Garmin software you mentioned but by using Franson GPS Gate I run multiple mapping programs that can give me whatever detail I desire.
I run Delorme Topo, Street Atlas 8.0 and 2007 (I don't like 2007 but use it for the newer maps) and Precision Maps on UIView (amateur radio APRS based program) in addition to the GRLx products. I usually run no more than three programs at a time due to screen clutter...
I also have the Garmin NUVI 750 running for highway travel but find it lacking for other purposes... It is great for getting to a hotel but leaves a lot at the door for country roads...

Thanks, Your input on the country roads and screen size were what I was looking for. I will add it to my chase programs. Bob
