What software is preferred to edit this? I just dumped a 5 minute clip of my new HC5 and it's a gig in size.

I've been a fan of Vegas products. Their latest offering (http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/vegaspro) will handle pretty much anything you can throw at it. It comes at a price though, around $400!

That sounds about right for HDV (which is 25 mb/s).

If you can use, Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express, both are great programs! But I've heard good things from Adobe Premiere Pro and Sony Vegas.

I use fcp and love it. 5gb should be about right for hd.

Has anyone had an issue trying to capture HDV through Premiere Pro? I can get it to work fine with Vegas but I get a "can't activate recorder, restart camera" message in Premiere.

Make sure you have the HD-enabling patch for Premiere installed - the original version won't support HD. It's a free download on their site.

What patch are you referring to? The 4.0.1?

Dan Robinson

If you're running 1.5, the patch is 1.5.1. 2.0 already has HD support, if you have that version or newer you should be good.

I'm running the CS4 demo.

That may be the problem - HD support wasn't enabled in the CS3 trial version, I'm assuming CS4 might be the same way...

Does anyone know if there is a free download for Windows Movie Maker HD? Ive been looking for it for a while, cant find it though. I guess its not too big of a deal, Since im getting a new laptop, Ill just spend the extra $30 and get vista home premium (even though vista sucks, im not going to spend $150 for XP, cause 4GB of RAM should do the trick)

Thanks

I have been asking myself the same question. I have 3 cameras, 2 digital, and 1 high def. I have a Sony DCR-DVD hybrid, JVC digital, Canon High Def. Does the Vegas Pro work for hybrids, and just digital recorders, or strictly high def? I am looking for something that I can format and then upload video to media etc.

Got my problem fixed. While I had selected HDV output on the camera, I forgot to select HDV in Premiere as the source. :o

Another point that might be useful to people reading this thread (who use Sony Vegas) is this one (http://www.stormtrack.org/forum/showpost.php?p=207217&postcount=12) by David Poch.
Another program that I like to use is a plug in for Sony Vegas is Gear shift by Vasst. What it does it make proxy files from your AVCHD or HDV video so you can edit them in real time on a slower computer. After you make your edits you click one button to replace the proxy files with your HD media. It has worked well for me and well worth the $49.99. You can find it here: http://www.vasst.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=102&category_id=74&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=66

Adobe Premiere and Media Studio are good for editing. At least they was the best before 12 years.

If you are a MAC user then Final Cut Express or IMovie is the way to go period. Both are excellent products. I use them both depending on what type of project I am working on.

Dan,

On a side note, how do you like the HC5? I'm shopping for a HD camera.

It's not bad for an entry HD camera.

What's the best way of pulling and burning the footage? I've looked around here and read some good things about TMPGEnc.

Unless you are really in love with the idea of spending $400-500 on video editing software, you really owe it to yourself to look at Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum (Pro Pack). For $87 (amazon price) you get a really powerful editing software (that does HD) along with video capture and burning. The Pro Pack also includes Sony Sound Forge. The software takes VST plug-ins (a lot of free ones are available). A fully functional trial version and downloadable Quick Start Guide is available from sonycreative.com (http://www.sonycreative.com). You can't really believe that it can be serious software, at that price, but it is. In addition, it also does basically "one button" publishing to YouTube.
