Hard to tell (can't see the location of the Sun), but the first picture looks like a classic sun dog and the second a parhelic circle.

I saw this to the left (south) of the sun as I left work. Almost pulled the camera out but got lazy, glad to see the pic. I missed the rainbow effect though.
Caught a few sunrises like the first pic this month, always a neat thing

I wonder what natives in the Amazon or maybe on some Pacific island wondered when they saw a jet contrail for the first time.
Sure would have scared the hell out of me!

Charles, your second pic reminds me of one of my pics. I believe it's called a supralateral arc. I love seeing optical phenomena in the sky. I've seen some nice pillars but have yet to grab a pic of one.
