WIFI hotspots

Does anyone know of any sites that have maps of where there are WIFI hotspots? We're going to start using wifi this year. We'll be using a modem card from AT&T/Cingular along with WIFI. I'm interested in know of WIFI hotspots in western OK, western KS, and the panhandles. Any help would be appreciated. :)

Hasn't been updated in a quite awhile. Debating how I would like to improve if I do at all in the future since there is wifi about EVERYWHERE now. Really, the only places I would like knowing where wifi exists are in towns of 5k and less. Anything greater is almost guarenteed to have a place.

I don't have any recommendations on maps, but just some general places that you might look for free Wi-Fi. I live in a college town of about 25,000 and Wi-Fi is available all over the place. If you are running NetStumbler while you drive around, you will probably be amazed at what you can pickup. If you don't want to leave your car, you will probably find access outside hotels, espresso shops/outdoor cafe areas, and the Public Library (not to mention outside schools). Newer restaurants are adding Wi-Fi to attract the business crowd. The university has their "official" access points locked down with a valid university log-on being required, but unofficial (rogue) access points probably still abound, particularly around residence halls.

These days, you can probably pick up open access points in just about any neighborhood and most people don't know enough to "lock them down" or even turn on WEP encryption. I leave the ethical considerations to the individual, but I personally liken it to someone having an overly powerful sprinkler system on. How unethical is it to catch a cup of water from the curb?

Picking up an open point is probably less time consuming than finding a map and locating a specific location - in my opinion. Those wanting to learn more about detecting open access points can simply do a Google search on "wardriving" (adding the word "tutorial" may narrow the search).

Haha! My VortexPursuit network is on the map! And it showed up twice, eh! Kudos to the local wardrivers, good job keeping up, as I haven't lived here for more than 2 months yet!

I-Spot offers free Wi-Fi access in a several locations in Iowa, including several rest area locations along I-80 and I-35 (all IA rest areas should be equipped with free Wi-Fi by 6-30-05):

They seem to be behind on getting Wi-Fi installed at some rest areas, as the list indicates the Lamoni Rest area along I-35 should be done in March, but nothing in sight over there yet. I tried the Wi-Fi at the Osceola rest area along I-35 NB, and its a pretty decent speed, could be better. The rest area signs before you exit off the highway should say "Wireless Internet" for areas that have the Wi-Fi access.

You need to get your own username and passcode, but it's free.

Funny you mention me and Dan Hinch were there this last weekend same rest area.. got like a 5.5 mbp connection. :) great info
