Are there any web sites explaining how vertical wind shear is calculated ?

"Using Hodographs" ('http://meted.ucar.edu/mesoprim/hodograf/print.htm') is an excellent tutorial that includes a section on vertical wind shear.

Check out the COMET Program modules (http://meted.ucar.edu/resource_modlist.php) for lots of great info ... some basic, some more advanced.
