I'm wondering if all the rain falling to the north now will cause the Mississippi river water levels to continue to rise farther south. If so, is New Orleans still threatened with a catastrophic flood?

I am wondering the same thing.

Its possible, but the Mississippi floods all the time and that's exactly what the levees were designed for. Prior to Katrina the Miss was also running very low so it has some extra capacity right now.

Okay, but there are reports of levees failures and flooding on both sides. More water coming from upstream won't help, right?

But keep in mind, the flooding previous times, would not be like flooding would be with this coming through.
