View Full Version : What is the name of your chase vehicle?
Susan Strom

I was just curious, I have heard some interesting names given to chase vehicles...everything from Arch Angel to Meatwagon.
We put a lot of work into our vehicles so I guess it makes sense to name them. Do you have a name for your chase vehicle and if so, what is it, and where did the name come from?

Never thought to "name" it. I guess the best would be descriptive. "Dad's ugly green truck" is what my daughter calls it. I told her she was going to get it when she was 16.. Sweet Revenge. :D

Susan, mine is aptly named:
"you stupid piece of ##@$%^& crap! why did you have to pick now to quit after I just spend X amount of dollars so this wouldn't happen?? can't you see the cell I'm chasing??"
I know, it's kind of a long name, however, when said enough, it kinda rolls off the tongue.
Seriously though, I never really considered naming it. I'm going to give this idea some thought...
Be well, TR

Never got her stuck, she's never quit on me and no replaced glass. However, if you see her coming towards you, do me a favor and slow down so as not to blow her off the road. I did find myself getting pushed across the road last year when I got crosswinded by an 80mph RFD. :-)

Hey that is a life-size Tonka!
Nothing fancy like "Arch Angel", my SUV is simply "Carmen", for the first town I drove to when I bought it. Carmen has a Spanish mission, built in the 1600s. Had to go there.
Look at the hail dents on that other one. Seen some field time? LOL

I call my explorer the "golfball" because its white and has dimples all over it (1 too many core punches I guess). I have had to replace my winshield once and lightbar domes each of the past 2 yrs.

My first chase vehicle was an 1988 Chevy Nova affectionately known as Haildodger. It lived up to that name until one rather disastrous night in Amarillo in 2000. I have now moved on to a 1999 Rav-4 that is currently "the chase vehicle with no name." Haildodger II doesn't seem to work......hopefully the inspiration will come before I run the thing into the ground....

My white Ford Ranger I had from 1997-1999 was called "Bones," because it was white and all the hail dents gave it a chewed up or knawed appearance, like a giant dogbone.
My green Ford Taurus I had from from 2000-2002 was called "The Road Warrior."
My current ride is called "Invisible." You'll understand why I haven't included a pic

Well. currently I have a 1993 Plymouth Grand Voyager.... haven't really named her yet... hmmmm... BUT am planning on getting a different ride soon and I have found this one I'm thinking about getting for my chase ride.. it's already named... ironic about the name, it's a perfect name for a chase vehicle...LOL see pics.. You will understand..

I was reading this site and noticed something that I have always wondered about. Why do people call their vehicles 'her' :?:
For example: Well. currently I have a 1993 Plymouth Grand Voyager.... haven't really named her yet...
I noticed the same thing when people talk about ships in the military. They address the ships as 'she' or 'her'.
Just asking but....why :?: :?: :?:

Tradition. But this is not the case everywhere...the Russians refer to their ships by the male gender.

Well with my car... it's a she too. Her only problem is she needs some lube every 500-600 miles ;).
Well... she's starting to get some transy problems when I put it in reverse (it takes a second or needs a bit of gas to get it to switch to R). Afraid to know what cost may be to fix that... man women are expensive.

Soon I'd like to change my rear-end to 3:73's for better fuel efficiency, and less wear-and-tear on the engine. Guy who had it before me raced sprint cars, and this was the pulling truck. Rebuilt 400 V8, rebuilt Turbo 400 and what I think are either 4:11 or 4:56 gears.

If you really wanted to go for fuel efficiency you could go grab a set of 3:08 gears. There are a ton out there, you could probably just go grab a whole rear end assembly from a similar truck at a junk yard. The nice thing about that is that rear-ends don't usually wear out, well not fast anyway.

I thought about 3:07's, but I figured it'd take too much off my torque being I have large tires and the truck is heavy. And too, I already bought the used gears; a 14-bolt 3:73 ring and pinion with corporate carrier. Now all I gotta do now is get the money to have a guy I know install them. I'd try myself, but this is something that is best left for someone who knows what they're doing. Couldn't find any 3:07's for a 14-bolt rear-end at the time, either.
Hopefully this'll work out good enough. Thanks for the advice, though; and if these aren't what I want, I may change again in the future if I can spare the money.

This is my new storm chase vehicle. It is named The Big Kahuna. It is equipped with a Kenwood TM-D700A FM dual band radio for primary communications. I also use a Radio Shack Pro-96 scanner, a Kenwood TH-D7A FM dual band HT for crossband repeating with the D-700.I also have APRS capabilities using the D-700 and D-7 with a Garmin GPS.
I use a Sony Vaio notebook computer and a Delorme GPS to run Street Atlas, and a two separate mag mount 800 MHz and 440/70 cm antennas along with a Diamond K-9000 motor driven antenna mount using a Diamond NR770 antenna for reception.
Needless to say I am also equipped with a Practical Trauma First Responders Kit everywhere I travel.
I currently use a Kestrel 4000 to measure the atmosphere and I am considering building a mobile mesonet and purchasing a WXWORX Mobile Threat Net system...if they lower the price.
The vehicle is a 2004 Nissan Armada. I will be trying to avoid any hail for obvious reasons.
Here is a link to my website. I have just started working on it so please be patient. www.warewebs.com (http://www.warewebs.com)

How about "Hard to put stuff in.."
I have a Grand myself, and although I love the vehicle in almost every other respect, the interior is a real challenge for the installation of serious equipment without major modifications. I found the biggest problem to be the location of the shifter etc. in the console.. prime real estate for radios etc. Still, once I worked everything out I ended up with something that worked.
Cheers!

Sure, I'll have to scan some of the pics I have. Basically what I did was to mount some communication type speakers to the overhead console for the radios; the radios themselves were mounted on each side of the centre console. The laptop mount was custom made for this app; it also incorporates a mount for the video camera and can be completely removed. I put the GPS unit (an older magellen unit) on the dash near the passenger side (I don't need to see the display all the time as I use the laptop connection for that). I am thinking about locating a centre console from a wrecked Grand Cherokee that I can radically modify so that I can reverse the "mods" in my ride if I decide to sell it someday.
Cheers!
