Does anyone have experience / opinion on usb wireless as opposed to the standard wireless pcmcia card?

Sure. We have the Linksys portable USB adapter, with the little stand and aimable antenna. When our broadband/wireless was out a few weeks ago, we used it to attach to somebody else's open broadband. The signal was too weak to use with the on-board PCMCIA. Works fine!

I have the D-Link DWL-G120 USB as a backup for networking around the house and it works quite well.
It is an easy setup for home/office or mobile operations.
