Stormtrack Forum Rules
Updated November 2009

Stormtrack's primary objective is to provide a venue for quality storm chasing discussion. We aggressively enforce all rules to maximize the density of original, useful weather discussion on our forum.

1. Rights and responsibilities. The Stormtrack forum is PRIVATELY OWNED. It is not a free-speech zone. Membership is a privilege. Users who wish to participate must adhere to the rules of our system and abide by our standards.

2. Prohibited content. All of these items are prohibited on the Stormtrack public forums and may result in administrative action without warning.
* Any post or pattern of conduct containing value judgments that are intended to shame or humiliate another member. This includes comments like "that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard".
* Acting in the unofficial capacity of a moderator to correct the behavior of other members. Use the Report This Post button or contact a moderator by private message if there is a problem.
* Posts that do not contain a sentence (e.g., smilies, one-liners, "LOL", and so forth).
* Weather forecasts and reports outside of Target Area, unless it is a non-US or non-precipitation event, or unless 48 hours has elapsed since the event.
* Flame wars and all posts that escalate them. We generally do not get involved in figuring out who did what; all parties involved in an escalation get suspended.
* Lengthy reference information, to include link lists, tables, and statistics, without informative comments
* Copyrighted material such as news stories, aside from brief quotations or excerpts
* Weather bulletins and weather data, unless it includes informative commments
* Signatures exceeding four lines in length or containing images. Blank lines count as lines. Standard font size only
* Commercial content, except by established Stormtrack members (ads should go in Marketplace)
* Public discussion, complaining, or contesting of a specific infraction or administrative action, whether concerning oneself or another user.
* Posts intended to be disruptive or offensive (trolling) or which do not adhere to our normal community standards.

3. Chase Forecasts / Chase Reports boards. These two forums are designated as areas where special rules apply. You must read the special guidelines for those forums before posting.

4. Private messages. The administrators do not maintain jurisdiction over the Private Message system and are not responsible for resolving private disputes between users. If you do not wish to receive messages from an individual, add them to your Ignore List in your Control Panel. Communicating threats against life or property on Stormtrack, even via Private message, are the sole exception to this policy and will result in an audit of the email system and account termination.

5. Real names. We require the use of real names. First names may optionally be initialized. Pseudonyms are permitted to allow users a measure of privacy, but we reserve the right to terminate an account if a user is publicizing their use of a pseudonym, is using a famous name, or is using the pseudonym as a sockpuppet account or to circumvent a ban.

6. Cookies. This discussion board system uses cookies to store information on your local computer. These cookies do not contain any personal information. The main use for the cookie is the automatic login feature. When you click the ‘Log Me In Automatically’ box when signing in, Stormtrack will set a cookie with your account ID in it. Next time you visit the forum, you will be automatically logged in.

7. Administration.

(a) The Moderator team is responsible for day-to-day administration of the user base, reviewing user posting for compliance, and issuing infractions. Moderators operate under the unlimited delegated authority of the administrator. Compliance with their instructions is mandatory. Undermining their authority and failing to comply are prohibited.

(b)The Administrator sets general policy and editorial guidance; advises, instills, and removes Moderators; and performs technical work. The Administrator supports the decisions of the Moderator team and except in extreme circumstances does not undermine their authority by reversing decisions.

8. Account deletion. You may delete your account by notifying any moderator. Once you confirm with us that the deletion is permanent, your account will be irrevocably deleted. You will not be eligible to be reinstated for 90 days and you must go through the approval process again.

9. Content disclaimer. Although the owners of Stormtrack have discretion to delete offensive material, these rights are rarely exercised. Deleting one post leads to a slippery slope of us being expected to delete each and every post that any member finds offensive. Therefore we do not delete content unless a serious violation of the rules has occurred and it is in the best interests of the community. You must discontinue using Stormtrack and find another venue if you feel that the moderators or administrators are not removing content to your satisfaction.

10. Authority. The Stormtrack forum Administrator reserves absolute control over the forum, including but not limited to modifying operating policies and access privileges without notice; removing, editing, or closing any topic at any time; and suspending or deleting any user for any reason.

For questions about these rules, post in the Stormtrack discussion area.
