It has been freezing cold here since the last system moved through. I heard parts of Colorado had around 25" of snow with that last storm. Crazy weather.

I saw on the news today that October for Iowa has been the 4th coldest and the 3d wettest we have ever had. Looks like we may be in the low 60's today before the cold front moves through. I will be sure to get outside and enjoy it.

Here in Quincy, IL we just recorded the coldest October on record and the 4th wettest. That goes along with the coldest July and August ever recorded earlier this year. Data has been recorded here in Quincy since the late 1930's.

I know there are many people out there that do not enjoy the snow all that much, but I hope we don't see a warmer than average winter to balance out some of these cold months. Time will tell.

In St. Louis, October this year was the wettest October on record, by nearly 4 inches:

New Record established this year: 12.38 inches
Old Record, from 1919: 8.52 inches
Normal for the month: 2.76 inches

It was also the fifth-coldest October on record, with an average temperature of 53.7, compared to the normal average temperature of 58.3. The coldest October on record was 1925, with an average that year of 51.4.

EDIT - Also it was the 4th wettest month of ANY month in St. Louis:

Des Moines, Mason City, and Waterloo suffered through their fourth, third, and fifth coldest Octobers on record.

The nationwide results are in, and October was indeed a cold one, with the lone exception of Florida, and possibly Georgia and Alabama. Oklahoma had its coldest October ever.

It was also awfully wet. The Midwest and southern states had some of their wettest Octobers ever. Iowa, Arkansas, and Louisiana did indeed have their wettest October ever.

Looks like another winter storm is hitting central CO with up to 26 inches of snow possible in the NWS forecast. This same area was hit hard by a snowstorm in October that brought up to 24 inches of snow to some areas. Is this common for CO for this time a year?

It's the time of year to break cold records again, and in Iowa there certainly were many to do so. I know Boone, Estherville and Sioux City at the very least all broke/shattered record lows, with lows dropping below -30 F in the NW part of the state. We tied a record low here in Ames at -18. Looks like Spencer may have dropped to -37! I'm sure that means it was even colder in portions of SD, MN, and ND.

Talking Record Low in Lincoln NE

Looks like Lincoln NE may have set a record low this morning (01/04) of -21 F degrees! The old daily record for that day was -12 F back in 1969. And it came within one degree of tying the all-time low temp of -22 F set back in 1974.
