March 2012 Stormtrack update

This is to let you know that we have made some changes to the sitewide and Target Area rules. You can find them at the usual links, or click directly here:

This is not a tightening down of the rules, but rather a simplification to make things a little less intimidating here on Stormtrack. Warnings were gotten rid of in January and we're handling infractions in a more informal manner. Members are still expected to uphold the highest of standards and not post in a disruptive manner, and we will still continue to moderate the board as usual. As a reminder, the cardinal offense here that will usually result in termination is giving the moderators trouble or dragging personal grievances out into the public forums. If a moderator corrects you on something, just comply and move on and you'll be fine.

On a more important note, we would like to see increased participation in Target Area, especially from the experienced chasers. We are in an era where we find ourselves "competing" with social media sites such as Facebook. If forecast experience becomes fragmented across Twitter, Facebook, and private friend groups, this hurts us all. In my opinion, there's no way those sites can consolidate such a collection of quality forecasts as we've done during the past ten years, and that's where Stormtrack has always excelled.

Likewise, we frown on experienced chasers taking away information from Target Area but not giving back their time and wisdom. The access logs show that a lot of this has been going on. We are encouraged by the 50+ posts we saw in the March 18 situation, but if a negative trend develops we may find ourselves restricting Target Area from all except those who are actively contributing to it.

We're nowhere near that point right now. But we do ask you to please avail yourself of Target Area and pledge to help it thrive as the spring 2012 season takes root. All posting restrictions have been lifted and anyone can post, but read the rules.

And a special note to beginners: don't feel compelled to have to post in Target Area. Quality or expertise is still expected in all posts. If there is any hypothetical Target Area restriction later on, I assure you that we will take into account that you're an interested beginner and you will still get access.

I have not forgotten the "chase targeting game" that we've offered in past years. The help I had expected with the coding did not materialize, so I will be outsourcing the work and we should get this running in April.

2012 Long Range Model Discusssion (> 7 Days Out)

I am creating this thread as we usually have one every year in this sub-forum. It allows members to discuss approaching systems that are greater than 7 days out and therefore cannot be discussed in the Target Area until it reaches the 7 day threshhold. I am going to stick this thread so it is easy to find and use throughout the 2012 chase season.

Mobile Home Parks and Tornado Shelters

Some of you are likely more up-to-date than I am on this topic. Some of the last information I read on this topic was from a book by Nancy Mathis entitled "Storm Warning." At that writing, she stated that only the state of Minnesota had a requirement that mobile home parks have storm shelters for their residents. There were only 2 other localities that had similar ordinances - Wichita, KS and St. Joseph, MO.
